Context Engineering Is a Mirage — The System Still Doesn’t Know

For years, we told ourselves prompt engineering was the key to AI control. Then came agents, then RAG. Now the new magic phrase is context engineering. It’s the latest poster child for “how to make the system smarter.”


But here’s the truth: context engineering is a mirage.


It’s not the next evolution. It’s the next illusion.


It doesn’t fix alignment. It doesn’t resolve judgment. It just optimizes what gets forgotten next.


Let’s set the record straight.


The Setup: What Is Context Engineering?


In its simplest terms, context engineering is the discipline of controlling what data, instructions, or memory gets fed into a large language model at inference time.


It’s the orchestration of:


  • Scratchpads
  • Memory selection
  • Summarization
  • Compression
  • Tool feedback routing
  • Prompt scaffolding
  • Token budgeting


…and increasingly, it’s being called “the new software architecture” for AI.


There’s some truth here: just like early operating systems needed memory allocation, AI systems need cognitive bandwidth allocation.



But here’s the problem: none of it addresses what the model actually does with that information.

Context engineering feeds. It doesn’t govern.


The Structural Flaws It Can’t Fix


No matter how elegant your memory retrieval stack is, you’re still stuck inside a system that:


1. Does Not Know

LLMs are confidence engines — not knowledge engines. You can load them with the right facts, tools, and structure, and still get ungrounded synthesis or catastrophic improvisation.


2. Does Not Decide

Context engineering assumes the model will use the inputs well. But there’s no judgment layer, no constraint, no evaluation loop. You’re handing a scalpel to a toddler and hoping memory access will make them a surgeon.


3. Does Not Understand Stakes

It can’t distinguish between low-stakes search and high-stakes decisions. Context is flattened — snack preference, legal risk, and patient vitals are just tokens.



4. Shifts Blame to the Architect

If it fails, it’s your fault for not “engineering the context correctly.” The epistemic burden is outsourced to developers who now carry responsibility for every hallucination as if it were a formatting error.


The Core Myth: "The System Would Be Smart If It Just Had the Right Inputs"


This is the same myth that powered early prompt engineering. Now it’s rebranded.

But the system is not broken because it forgets.


The system is broken because it
doesn’t know what should matter.
